I’ve been really happy with the KMC Z8.1 chain. It’s noticeably well-made—smooth and consistent in how it rolls, with good stiffness that keeps everything feeling solid on the bike. Shifting feels reliable, and I haven’t had any weird stretching or performance drop-off since installing it.
Another thing I like is how easy it is to live with: it fit cleanly, looks great, and feels like it’s holding up to regular riding. If you’re looking for a dependable 8-speed chain that does what it’s supposed to do without drama, the KMC Z8.1 is an easy recommendation.
Despite being KMC's entry level 8/7/6 speed chain, it lasts a good long while if you take care of it (I'm comparing vs cheaper brands available from various online stores). It's also longer at 116 links which can be required on certain bikes and drivetrains.
The application was a 1985 Peugeot with period-correct drivetrain, though it wears a Suntour 7-GT rear derailleur of the time with Suntour Perfect 6 speed freewheel, itself an improvement on the OE French parts. The Z8 is not KMC's top line chain, true, but this friction setup now shifts *so much better* compared to the original Sedis chain it replaced. A longer 116 link length was much needed and appreciated.
